ABBA RE-UNITED!
It was great to see the four members of Swedish superpop group Abba reunited at the Stockholm premiere of the movie version of Mamma Mia. Still looking good although Bjorn and Benny have said they will NEVER reform. "We will never appear on stage again," says Ulvaeus. "There is simply no motivation to re-group. Money is not a factor and we would like people to remember us as we were. Young, exuburent, full of energy and ambition. I remember Robert Plant saying Led Zeppelin were a cover band now because they cover all their own stuff. I think that hit the nail on the head." Well said sir and here is one of their greatest songs and thank you for the music Abba....

I would rather be waterboarded in some Peshawar basement than have to listen to Abba.
But good on them for not taking the easy cash a reunion might afford.
Funny, the women look like they are holding up better than the men.
Phantom,I like abba-they're ok, but the Miami showband are reuniting in september for a concert in aid of children in crossfire. I think thats a one off reunion too.
The Miami Showband Killings
I despise ABBA.
Phantom- I can't help but agree :o))
Sweedish men aren't the handsomest looking guys at the best of times, and those two look as if they've morphed into northern Irish geography teachers.
Philistines the whole lot of you.
ABBA are and will be remembered as one of the greatest pop groups of all time. Many of their songs are beautifully constructed and memorable. The success of Mama Mia the musical and now the movie is testament to this.
A great pop band. I understand their reluctance to jump on stage like some Boca Raton Cover Band.
Who cares what the men look like? All these years later and I'm still trying to decide between Agnetha or Frida.
Abba were and still are one of the best pop groups ever.
Agnetha looks to be benefiting from soft focus (clever girl!)
Loved Abba - OK they didn't get me thinking but they got me dancing1!!
Mama Mia was a hoot!! - trying to guess the next song :)
Yeah, okay, they were a manufactured group with manufactured music. It's not like those descriptions couldn't apply to most British pop groups, and we all know where Justin Timberlake came from.
But Abba did it very well. The music has lasted the test of time. They even managed to turn a nice phrase or two; not a bad feat considering that English was not their language.
Oh Daphne Daphne Daphne ! I am speechless :(
You already have me smiling today Colm! :-D
Daphne.
Pleased to do so. Now if only I could also make you appreciate ABBA then that would make me smile :)
Never happen, darlin'. Any other suggestions?
Not ones that could be repeated on a respectable blog like ATW ;)
--The music has lasted the test of time--
Yes, it was bad then and it is bad now.
I can only conclude that Amercians never really 'got' ABBA. Much to America's loss.
bad, bad, bad, bad - very bad music. We should ban it forthwith!
Colm, you are a wonderfully naughty man, shame you've got a tin ear.
Daphne
Spend an evening slowly but surely knocking back your favourite tipple and listen to ABBA's greatest hits. You won't know most of them as they weren't big hits in the US but they are faultless examples of pop craftsmanship, second only to the Beatles. If you don't end up singing along, there's something worng with you.
Colm, I would have to be in the blackout stage of complete inebriation before I would ever sing along with an ABBA song.
God is going to send you straight to hell for comparing them with the Beatles. ;-)
**admit it, you've just got a thing for chesty swedes......
Colm -On the contrary, ABBA is appreciated here. A perfect visual and audio group.
Phantom's Bay Ridge was too enraptured with Disco at that time to appreciate the classic pop of ABBA, and of course Daphne's Texans thought The Oak Ridge Boys too Euro-trashy.
The Oak Ridge Boys are gay.
ABBA is appreciated by the tone deaf who also liked Captain & Tenille.
Bernard: "Sweedish men aren't the handsomest looking guys at the best of times, and those two look as if they've morphed into northern Irish geography teachers."
Mind you, they're astronomically wealthy geography teachers. That probably improves the odds against sleeping alone.
**admit it, you've just got a thing for chesty swedes......
aah yes ! Benny and Bjorn's hairy chests were the real clincher..
But Gordon, Benny and Bjorn managed to get Agnetha and Anni-Frid before they became millionaires... some guys have all the luck !
Daphne: "The Oak Ridge Boys are gay."
There's a few thousand church-going ladies who would testify differently. Gospel singers make out at a rate some rock stars would envy.
Colm: Or what rhymes with it.
Daphne: Admit it - you hate ABBA because you think Fernando and Chiquita are pro-illegal immigrant songs.
Everywhere I turn you men are going all hoto on me......
Colm,
Musicians have it made.
Agnetha for me, but I'd let Frida eat lefse in my bed.
Daphne
What's hoto ?
God I hated the disco days. I could have been part of that mob at the White Sox baseball game, when they had Disco Demolition Night had I lived in Chicago
spanish for gay, Colm. Panocha would work too!
Disco was very bad too.
Phantom: Saturday Night Fever was filmed (in part) in Bay Ridge. No questions will be asked of you here, you are among friends now.
I was going to ask Gordon what Lefse was, but I guess the answer would not live up to my fevered imagination...
It would if you're gay Colm. :-)
Amazing how my Abba post has descended into a gayfest. My view is that Anna - the blonde - would turn any gay straight....
If Daphne revealed herself to be a man that would make me gay !
How's that for confusing !
Colm,
Imagine a somewhat fluffier tortilla made from potatoes. Top it with butter and brown sugar. That's lefse (LEF-suh). It's really more Norske than Sweede, but it crosses over some. And Frida was actually born in Norway.
In Minnesota, ethnic food means Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Polish, Ukranian, Russian, German, Italian, Irish (and just lately) Vietnamese, Hmong, Korean, Mexican and Somali. I can think of a restaurant specializing in each within a couple of miles from here.
Give me a sec to wrap my brain around that one Colm........
so I could make you bi? An all around people person, as some great wit on another thread put it - man, I've got some serious mojo! I need to bottle this stuff and get rich. :-)
Dang Gordon, you ruined my joke!
Gordon - I had no idea Arby's had such a wide variety of choices.
David, ummm no - but it might make him feel like belting out a couple of Bette Midler tunes.
Daphne,
LOL! You are the wind beneath my wings
Mahons,
The nearest Arby's is more like four miles. Thhhhpppp!
Whoops. Forgot about the Arby's in the Skyway in downtown. Two miles it is.
Bette Midler ? ABBA ? Disco ?
All this thread now needs is a young man posting a comment from his room at the YMCA , mentioning the different singing styles between Judy Garland and Liza Minneli and how he wishes David would put a Barbra Streisand Youtube clip on here, and failing that, asking when is that 'hunky' Troll going to post another Vlog ..
...while smoking a fat stogie.
I like finishing your sentences Colm.
Daphne
Why thank you ma'am. You finished me off nicely !
you're very welcome.
Glad to see you back, you were gone for days....did you have fun?
So, who are you're favorite groups or singers, besides abba?
Daphne
Yes I was away for a few days. I was visiting friends in a seaside town called Brighton and I also went to a place called Cheddar Gorge which is a little village in the west of England which has some famous caves and yes they make cheese there.
As to my favourite musicians I can honestly say I temd rarely to have favourite acts. With very few exceptions I don't particularly love specific groups or singers. I tend to like individual records or Albums, and they cross all spectrums. I admit I temd to like more commercial music rather than specialist types of stuff and this can range from everyone from Billie Holliday to Johnny Cash to U2 to yes ABBA, and I will say the album I have most listened to in the last couple of years is Amy Winehouses Black to Black although that's been done to death now. Some people might say I am very Middle of the road in my tastes but I don;t care. I like what I like and everyone else should do the same and not try to be 'cool' or clever about their musical likes.
