ANOTHER RIGHT TO BE ABOLISHED...
I read that the legal right of all UK householders to have their bins emptied by their local council is to be abolished.
The government is to give councils the power to refuse to collect rubbish if home owners fail to abide by draconian rules which may include leaving bins in the right place, sticking to weight restrictions and following strict recycling policies. Labour is quietly pushing the new rules through parliament without any debate after it proposed amendments to a 130-year-old law which has, until now, made it a statutory duty of local authorities to collect household waste.
Given that MY local Council levies an annual rates bill on me for over £2000 and ALL the only service they provide for me is collect my household rubbish, every two weeks, should we householders not be given the legal right to opt out of this iniquitous rates system? I care nothing for my local Council and want nothing to do with them. However Labour continues to target us, to punish us, to add cost and hassle to our daily lives - sooner or later we need to rise up and throw off the yolk of their endless and wicked oppression.

Agreed.
What really annoys me is the glee that show when they impose their stupid rules.
The local councils need to be aware of the fact that they are there to serve the locals who pay for them. If they start refusing to empty peoples rubbish for silly arcane and petty reasons then the locals should organise to take their bags of rubbish and dump them outside the town hall.
Colm,
The concept of public service is noble and worthy but as you and Matt point out many of these little tinpot hitlers think otherwise. And now, government is empowering them!!!
"Currently councils must collect rubbish from home owners unless it breaches one of two policies – "a closed lid" policy where the bin is not shut properly or a "side waste" policy meaning bin bags cannot be left alongside wheelie bins."
The second "offense" sort of makes sense,
HOWEVER
I fail to comprehend how a lid, which is not shut properly, is cause not to collect. That sounds so blatently petty.
Thank goodness the County Council in my area are not so assinine.
Do you remember when the Dustbin Men came to collect your dustbin, hoisted it upon their shoulders, carried it the the dustcart, emptied into the dustcart and then returnerd it. I do. But that was back in the days when the dustmen really provided a service and Council Chiefs had not lost the plot. Times change but Councils really should do better than they now do. Afterall, they work for us don't they. Remember, we have the vote.
I would get an assessment of the cost of the bin-emptying service then contract it privately and take the cost off my council tax. I'm sure that it's a reasonable case.
