I'm not so sure anymore, the people are in a bad mood and the animus is aimed squarely at the GOP. If the Democrats had run a centrist without baggage it would be an easy shoe-in for their party. The only thing that might save McCain are the cynical independents. The House and Senate will be lost.

Its the GOP who are running a centrist without baggage, or at least as little baggage as any politician could have after so long in Washington. Also a war hero and an obviously decent man.

Interesting quote from McCain here that hasn't seen much play:
"Would it be fair to say that you would be open to appointing Democrats in your administration?
I would be more than open. I will appoint Democrats to my administration."

If the "base" hates McCain this much then Obama has a chance in November.
I always assumed that party loyalty would get the vote out for McCain, but it looks like many in the GOP would prefer to lose than see him in the White House. If that's true, then prepare for a long spell in the wilderness guys. If Obama wins in November, he'll likely win in 2012 as well. And the Dems will have Congress as well...
