EU to Me are Everything

Gordon Brown must have been singing the slightly changed title of that 1976 song in the shower last night, before performing the Monster Mash or whatever dance cycloptic ogres perform during their ablutions. For Gordon, the betrayal of the UK finally reached fruition yesterday as the Czech President meekly reached for his pen to put the finishing touches to the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty. It has been eight long years during which the French and Dutch said 'No', thus rendering them - in the eyes of the Brussels elite - completely unsuitable for ever having the opportunity to express a view on Europe before the end of time. The Irish said 'No' initially, but were overwhelmed by the propagandistic half nelson of certain doom unless they changed their minds. Lo and behold they did!!
In the United Kingdom the dismissive arrogant contempt for the people reached a zenith neither the French, nor the Irish, nor the Dutch could match. Here we were promised a referendum by this foul, putrefacted, treacherous, uncaring skid mark of an administration. Suddenly, when they realised the British have a fundamentally different attitude to European integration from the people of the other 26 member states, they decided to lie to us about the status of the treaty and consequently deny us the opportunity of either scuppering the EU gravy train or our participation in it.
Although I hate to admit it, David Cameron's volte face on the promise of a referendum is the only thing he could have done in the circumstances. It is extremely difficult to hold a plebiscite on something that has already come into force. What Cameron needs to do today is to set out a series of options he will make available to the British people in the event of a Conservative government (please God!!) next year. This could be a multi-optional vote, which includes a question on Britain's total withdrawal from the European Union, but should also - as of right - include other (less palatable from my own perspective) less dramatic outcomes. The British people have been lied and betrayed into this continental morass for the better part of 37 years. Their voice must now be heard.
