evil purpose

Yesterdays nightclub plots 'coincided' with Mr Justice Astill jailing for life the terror cell that plotted to blow up the Ministry of Sound ("dancing slags") nightclub and Bluewater shopping centre.  Khyam, Waheed Mahmood, Garcia, Akmed and Amin refused to enter court to be sentenced for life with no parole for at least 20 years.

Times reports that 'The conspiracy that led to a jury deliberating for 27 days, the longest in British criminal trial history, had started in November 2003, with the purchase of the ammonium nitrate fertiliser that was central to the plot - reported by one baffled John Stone, a salesman.  It was winter, thought Mr Stone, and the order was enough to cover five football pitches. “What do you want all that for?” he asked. “Are you planning a bomb attack?”

A week after their arrests, Mohammed Babar, an American al-Qaeda operative who trained with Khyam in Pakistan, was arrested in New York. The intelligence service compiled a huge list of friends, relatives and contacts, many with multiple identities"

Khyam had spoken with “enthusiasm and pleasure of the slaughter of nonbelievers”, the judge said. “You took full advantage of the benefits free society had to offer. You exploited the freedoms you sought to destroy with such evil purpose. You betrayed the country that’s given you every advantage in life".

Terrorism is always and only ever about 'dodging a bullit' - but public vigilance plays its part in operations, always has and always will.

vigilance is important, but it is no substitute for strong laws. Why can't the intelligence services have some black ops and bring the war to these bloody terrorists who want to kill us?

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 12:21PM | Unregistered CommenterHannah

It wasnt just vigilance. Its about a number of things and that is one part of it all. They know who these latest guys are. As for laws if it turns out to be someone they could not get before on evidence as i suspect, - then the 90 day detention laws will be firmly back on the agenda. This time they wont look like a government panic reaction though.

Hannah

They are not terrorists just murdering criminals.

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 03:11PM | Unregistered CommenterNosmo King

Hannah,

I totally agree. I think Military Intelligence, if they know someone's a terrrorist, they should make them disappear. If they do it properly, no one need ever know.

Richard,

So much for the small state, then. The state can simply rub out people it "knows" to be terrorists and nobody need provide oversight ever know.

(Saying that, I understand the sentiment)

Nosmo King,

None so blind, eh?

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 03:15PM | Unregistered CommenterCharles in Texas

alison in your link it says: "The fertiliser was switched by police for cat litter and five weeks passed before the gang were arrested". Does this not ring (good) alarm bells about this current case and the amazing coincidences of the phone failures if the police know these guys?

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 03:25PM | Unregistered Commenteralex

Frank,

my point does contradict all sorts of things but not the small state. You're right to highlight the key factor, that they *know* - otherwise it would be outrageous to assassinate a mere suspect.

It would be imperative that there was no oversight - no politician or policemen, it's against the Law.

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 03:37PM | Unregistered CommenterRichard Carey

I prefer a traditional method. Better to make them outlaws and put a price on their head. That's a small-state solution, out-sourced, value for money.

Richard,

Erm, OK...well that's clear enough. I'm sure that happens already.

OT, an amusing quote I found:

"The last word? Well, I guess that falls to the most recent comment not deleted. (No offence to the proprietor of this blog, but comment censorship only serves to make your own arguments appear weak, else why would you hide those of your opponent? I dunno, maybe you had good reason, maybe you didn’t, point is we’ll not now know, and thus you’ve weakened your position.)"

Can you guess who wrote that? LOL!

so whats going on at glasgow airport then

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 04:17PM | Unregistered Commenteralison

Ahh yes I know nothing I am the poor ignorant yank that must bow before the proud British...

Well first of all Alison you are the village twit I was using your number from this paragraph

"Troll - First up - read the post - i posted that line at about 8am this morning. Weve been at war before, 70s 80s and before then - when some 35 000 Londoners died. Not sure why you enjoy this sort of thing but really what is your problem? Its as if you enjoy pointing out the obvious."

You tend to get nasty when people don't see things your way. You lack the ability to try and persuade someone to your point of view so you strike out like a petulant child.

So enlighten my poor "amount of pathetic (or malign) ignorance" as to what YOU were refering to with these words

"Weve been at war before, 70s 80s and before then - when some 35 000 Londoners died."

I doubt that you will even have the ability to respond.

Alex/Noel since you know you could answer also.

Frank your not even worth responding to for someone who went to law school your lack of depth is proof that the more schooling you have the less common sense you are capable of.

Oh and I see 2 cars have just rammed into glasgow airport and are now burning I guess Alison will be celebrating tonight how well the police did at directing trafic around this possible terrorist attack.

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 04:45PM | Unregistered CommenterThe Troll

Now,now Troll. Our brethern and allies are under attack! They need our solidarity and prayers at the moment.

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 04:48PM | Unregistered CommenterCharles in Texas

Give it a rest Troll.

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 04:54PM | Unregistered Commenteralison

Troll - you'll like this. Eye witness reports of 'anger', when questioned if he meant towards the way the evacuation was handled, the guy replied chaos had ensued and the police had to stop men trying to get to the driver of the car' 'it would have been the end of him'.

Charles - Troll couldnt give crap about that!

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 04:57PM | Unregistered Commenteralison

I stand by our cusins accross the pond As we Americans always have. But Alison attacked me because I pointed out things she didn't want to hear.

I am on my way to work I will be back in a couple of hours (I have to go make sure the cargo for British Air is loaded properly) I will chime in then to see if she has enlightened me in explaining this statement
""Troll - First up - read the post - i posted that line at about 8am this morning. Weve been at war before, 70s 80s and before then - when some 35 000 Londoners died. Not sure why you enjoy this sort of thing but really what is your problem? Its as if you enjoy pointing out the obvious."

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 04:59PM | Unregistered CommenterThe Troll

no I won't give it a rest. You snapped at me and got snotty and I will hold you to statements.

If your going to get nasty with people your going to justify it or your going to be grilled

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 05:01PM | Unregistered CommenterThe Troll

"Charles - Troll couldnt give crap about that!"

Your such a little b**ch I do care thats why I stated the obvious that yesterdays near miss was no reason to celebrate. You just can't help yourself can you.

EXPLAIN YOUR STATEMENTS AND ENLIGHTEN US you threw down this gauntlet I will not let it go I am sick of your nasty little comments like the one you just made about me to chas and I will not relent.

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 05:05PM | Unregistered CommenterThe Troll

Hey Charles, how come when the brits are under attack the yanks don't give a shit, or pass it off with tongue in cheek remarks, BUT when it happens to the US ie 9/11 the brits are your best allies.

the afghans frightened the shit outta you guys and we have to stay and hold the fort while y'all piss off to safety.

Jeez the double standards.

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 05:06PM | Unregistered CommenterHannah

No you couldnt Troll. You dont give a crap.

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 05:08PM | Unregistered Commenteralison

And no we just dont want to give them the kudos Troll, the way you do - so when they mess up - good!

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 05:09PM | Unregistered Commenteralison

"I stand by our cusins accross the pond As we Americans always have"

Oh rubbish - i read your posts for the first time yesterday and they were sneering and almost enjoying what was going on here. The fact that people here werent running around screaming like lunatics seemed to irritate you! We arent the same as you and we react differently. I think calling Alison a bitch is totally uncalled for. Especially with all this going on. I mean, seriously, has everyone taken complete leave of their senses on this site?

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 05:16PM | Unregistered Commenteralex

Really and how do you come to that conclusion over the past couple of years my comments have been consistent in support of Brits. I have stood with every post against terror and terrorists wether IRA or Islamic, I have done numerous posts on here and my blog in support of Britains fight in the war on terror In support of Thatcher, I even supported Blair when he did the right things in realizing the Islamic threat

I have pointed out the inconsistancy of and idiocy of how they have handled the irish terrorists. I have also shown my support of the Brits against losing who they are to the EU.

You don't like the fact that I don't like socialists which is what you are.

Back your statements up little girl.

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 05:17PM | Unregistered CommenterThe Troll

Alex since you have only read my statements for the first time yesterday you have no idea of my history.

My statements yesterday were pointing out that there was no reason to celebrate that you got lucky

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 05:19PM | Unregistered CommenterThe Troll

"And no we just dont want to give them the kudos Troll, the way you do - so when they mess up - good!"

Who am I giving kudos missy?

I have been consistently anti-terror

once again you allow yourself to be motivated in your responses by your emotions and without facts point out in any of my posts over the years where I have ever given any inkling of support or even justification for any act of terror

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 05:22PM | Unregistered CommenterThe Troll

I hate to tell you this but that is NOT how it read at all The Troll. You were and are bang out of order frankly. I mean imagine if British people enjoyed 9/11 or any situation that will likely manifest itself in the US sometime soon. Being pragmatic and positive isnt disregarding the issue else why would she bother blogging it. Hannah makes a good point. You should probably just calm down too, your comments come across really weird.

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 05:24PM | Unregistered Commenteralex

Allison it is obvious that you are incapable of relating facts to back up your beliefs or your statements.

You are a typical liberal a lover of socialism and motivated purely by what makes you feel good whether it accomplishes anything or not.

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 05:26PM | Unregistered CommenterThe Troll

Thanks Alex and Hannah

Troll - pick a thread please. At least one can stay on topic instead of this little personal hatefest you all have going on!

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 05:27PM | Unregistered Commenteralison

and so well timed for a new leader..........

now gordon gets to flex his "sercurity" muscles.

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 05:30PM | Unregistered Commenterdaytripper

not how it was read by you Alex. So you then are agreeing that the security forces should be celebrated for their excellant work yesterday in allowing a terrorist plot to reach the stage where the only reason hindreds weren't killed is because the bombs didn't go off and not even realizing that they towed one of the bombs all over downtown London?

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 05:30PM | Unregistered CommenterThe Troll

Chanel four is saying the men at the airport were off asian origin.....Looks like it is more of the london terror.

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 05:31PM | Unregistered CommenterHannah

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 05:32PM | Unregistered CommenterThe Troll

C'mon day tripper what are you saying false flag? too funny!

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 05:32PM | Unregistered CommenterHannah

DT - flex his what?!

Troll - have you ever heard of the IRA phrase - you have to be lucky all the time we only have to be lucky once?

Hannah - they say it almost kicked off up there also. Mob rule or something?

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 05:33PM | Unregistered Commenteralison

Troll - please see other thread - i replied to you there. Im not interested in indulging your hatefest, towards me or otherwise. Ive been clear about where i stand on the Iraq war and terrorism etc. You talk of blog history to Alex but disregard others when it suits you.

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 05:35PM | Unregistered Commenteralison

For Muslim/Asian role models look no further than the brilliant scottish comedian Hardeep Singh Kohli, or the fine bowler Monty Paneswar.

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 05:49PM | Unregistered CommenterMasada

Troll: I totally get why you are reacting the way you are. (I think) It's not out of some petty little spite or irritation, which in the grand scheme of things doesn't matter one wit.

No, the problem is the lack of resolve in the UK and in Europe (and with our own left) regarding facing the obvious and doing what is necessary.

Instead of seriously taking to task the players of this growing movement of totalitarianism Europe hides under the table.

Putting on a brave face and partying in the face of yet more bombs is stupid. Grow up. It's not going away. It's not about feeling brave in the face of danger. It's about taking care of business.

Demonstrate in the streets for responsible leadership. Write, call and mobilize your political elite.Turn off the BBC

The US Marines, some of whom I know, fight for freedom. And Europe's inability to do anything except rally around the "soft power" of diplomacy means that more of these awesome men and women - AMerica's best -- will die.

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 05:50PM | Unregistered CommenterPatty

Patty's usual simplistic and stupid call for vague violence directed at, um, someone, anyone.

Never mind that the UK is actually an ally and fighting her silly war already.

"Demonstrate in the streets for responsible leadership."

That happened already, but you invaded Iraq anyhow. Now you want a different government that won't go along with the US? OK.

"Turn off the BBC"

No, the tennis is on.

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 06:02PM | Registered CommenterFrank O'Dwyer

TTroll - No that isnt what anyone is arguing at all.

Furthermore you are merely speculating.

The security services here failed a few times with the IRA also. Did you care as much then? Serious question.

It doesnt sound like you do or did at all - and that is how you come across yesterday, with bells and whistles on - in a sneering way.

Its like Hannah said earlier

My take is that an act of bravery is chalked up to american heroism at every opportunity, so whats the problem here? 9/11 was a catastrophe but you still managed to find a pragmatic element in it all (however pathetic it looked at the time, and we felt and rooted for you here). Really, whats it to you if we remain pragmatic right now.

You do come across like the US version of an islamic nutjob jumping up and down though. Not great.

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 06:04PM | Unregistered Commenteralex

Was Glasgow Airport used last year to transport missiles to Israel during the conflict with Hezbollah? That could provide the reason why that particular site was attacked. Plus George Galloway got beaten up there last month :)

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 06:06PM | Unregistered CommenterRoss

My word, my fellow Americans! Cut the Brits some slack today! Glasgow still smolders.

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 06:11PM | Unregistered CommenterCharles in Texas

Frank: You sleep soundly at night because others fight on your behalf.

Yes, there were demonstrations in the street NOT TO FIGHT in Iraq. And in last years Israel/Lebanon, more demonstrations NOT TO FIGHT. NOT FIGHTING OR OPPOSING EVIL is what Europe (and America's left) wants. And many more will die because of this weak-kneed, dreamy "give peace a chance" mentality.

And you call yourself morally superior?

Alex: Islamic jihad is not the IRA. Not in scale, nor in intent.

BTW, I lived in London during some of the IRA bombings (in the City) Not fun, but not Islamic Jihad.

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 06:17PM | Unregistered CommenterPatty

Of all the recent incidents throughout the world attributable to 'militants', how many of those 'militants' were RoP-ers? Indeed, is there a link? If so, could it be blamed on GWB and MMGW?

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 06:20PM | Unregistered CommenterAllan@Oslo

Instead of seriously taking to task the players of this growing movement of totalitarianism Europe hides under the table.

what are you on about?

if you know anything about islamism you should know that as a political movement it has been a monumental failure for around half a century. not even the best intentions of the current whitehouse seem able to change this.

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 06:20PM | Unregistered Commenterdaytripper

Charles: Why is it always British v America? The jihadist don't see it that way. It is Western CIvilization v. Islamists.

What makes you think I don't care about the airport? It could have been LAX. I take these attacks very personally but I fear for us because of Europe's lack of resolve to fight this.

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 06:22PM | Unregistered CommenterPatty

Daytrpper: "as a political movement it has been a monumental failure for around half a century. "

This propoganda might work with the less informed. Unfortunately, I know too muc.

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 06:23PM | Unregistered CommenterPatty

Patty,

"Yes, there were demonstrations in the street NOT TO FIGHT in Iraq. "

And now you're asking us to demonstrate to change the leadership that took the country to war in Iraq anyway. Fine with me.

Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 06:34PM | Registered CommenterFrank O'Dwyer

Y'know, if all of this is as Allah wills, I have to think that Allah doesn't much like his followers.

One car bomb discovered by chance in London, another found because it was parked illegaly (Huh?) and one attempt at Glasgow that's resulted in a burning Jeep and some building damage.

That sequence doesn't sound like they actually have their God in their corner, now does it?:)

Patty, if it's Western Civilization vs Islamists - that was won centuries ago.
