I hate to break the bad news, but as a very long time ATW lurker and occasional commenter, it was never my presumption that a bunch of american stuff from like grizzle would invade the place. Definitely a lowering of standard.

Sorry, David.

curious McK are you refering to this post or just me and my sentiments in general?

Please be specific.

Since you are someone who rarely comments do you feel that what you have to say is to high above the standards, or ???

Check your email Colm. I'm not letting you go that easy.

MCK - continue to grease your pole in private. If this is the best you have to offer, you ought to remain a lurker.

Troll, bows, props and heartfelt thanks. Bring the kids & dogs, it will be fun! Tats, creeks, beer/margaritas, bbq, and guns! The husband's from Pittsburgh - we're all well suited!

Daphne,

"MCK - continue to grease your pole in private."

LOL. As this is obviously an invitation to Colm to make one of his inimitable comments, I pass :0)

Actually, grizzle, you seem to have contaminated the place in general with a bunch of american entertainment and not high quality content.

Like who needs a bunch of crappy rockers ?

Of course, its nice to honor the 40th passing of Dr. King but really the work isn't quite done. And I think he would agree with this.

Shout Out To Obama

Okay, dump it on.

MCK,

I don't know how much you know about music but let me assure you that Mr Seger and his band were responsible for some of the finest noises ever heard in this quadrant of the galaxy.

Do check out Bob's vocals and the unsurpassed guitar solo on Like a Rock.

(I'd provide you with a link if I thought you'd bother your arse to click on it.)

Grizzly

it was much better when the music was the sole preserve of the host - now Americans, and it does seem to be an American thing, are posting the music videos they tend to reduce or over whelm David's contributions in this area, they simply flood the front page with junk.

Add that to the bad spelling - which we can all claim since most of us get it wrong, but even the basics??

' WERE SAVED' = 'We're saved' or simply write it out in full 'We Are Saved!'

The front page on this site and content has definitely fallen below much of the standard of the internet. Use your spell check for the sake of the site at least.

Note this headline of a post from David.

HELP, WE'RE OPPRESSED EVERYWHERE!

Note it is NOT 'WERE' but 'WE'RE'.

That's basic stuff that even a kid would get right.

Cait,

I feel that the reason my fellow American, the Troll, spells so poorly is that, when he posts to ATW, his anger gets the better of his grammar. The Troll is a true example of the "Angry White Man" who has no one to vote for in our upcoming presidential election. You can expect him to be semi-coherent for at least the next even months.

Just played the youtube video for Like A Rock

Have loved this song forever. Remember getting chills hearing this sad, regretful song come out of nowhere from the radio, This is the first time seeing the video--its not bad--he didn't try to do too much with it.

Very good. Always liked and respected Seger and his work.

Phantom,

That SL-i-i-i-i-DE work in the guitar solo gives this boy chills!

Bob made a great comeback recently I thought. Voice never changed. Mind you, he sounded like a senior citizen when he was 20 :0)

Saturday, April 5, 2008 at 02:42PM | Registered CommenterDawkins

This is my favourite Bob Seeger song, a classic, tho in bad quality here.
A memory: When I was in the states I had so many songs in my head I wanted to buy, stuff I'd heard on the radio etc but didn't know the name or by whom. I walked into this music store and shyly sang a bit of one to the attendant sotto voce. He said: "You mean this?" and went on to sing a verse at full volume, much to the amusement of everyone within earshot. He told me it was Fire Lake by Bob Seeger. This encouraged me, and I then sang bits of the others, some of which were quite obscure. Not only did the attendant recognise and was able to sell me every one of them, but seemed to think this was a normal way of ordering music!

Saturday, April 5, 2008 at 03:25PM | Registered CommenterNoel Cunningham

By the way, that great song is of course for my valkyrie, Daphne, a girl worth a big risk.

Does anyone know why she left, BTW?
And will she be back?

Saturday, April 5, 2008 at 03:35PM | Registered CommenterNoel Cunningham

Cait

As for the Friday night video it was always intended to be a break from the usual back and forth on political issues. Somthing to lighten the mood.

If it is the consensus of the Group to leave it only to David I will. I usually only add 1 song to contrast what ever David has posted or to compliment his post.

This thread however was a Good Bye song for Daphne and falls into the "if you don't like it go scratch" catagory because it was not meant for you.

NOW as for the spelling and the lowering of standards.
There are two reasons I don't check my spelling

The first and most important one is that it annoys people like you.

The second reason is it is a tactic used to point out the lack of substance in someones argument. If they go off on a spelling and grammer tangent it is usually because the have no logical reasons for their point of view on whatever the topic is, which is typical with liberals.

Also on any post about Algore Misspelling matches the intelligence of him and anyone who buys into the con game of global warming.

Saturday, April 5, 2008 at 03:40PM | Registered CommenterGrizzly Mama / Troll

MCK and Cait: That's it??? That's really all that you can manage?

Pedantic whinging over misspells (sp?) and wistful longings for the days when the Americans weren't around?

What happened to acerbic wit? penetrating truths flung like mud clods? the peanut bowl upturned on the counter, falling off the barstool?

Critical commentary just ain't what it used to be.

Saturday, April 5, 2008 at 03:42PM | Registered CommenterPatty

I for one appreciate all our American regulars. They add a great helping of lively sparkly fun to ATW and it would be alot duller without them.

Noel - It wouldn't be right for me to speculate as to why Daphne left. I think part of the reason was due to a disagreement with another regular, but I certainly hope and trust our yellow rose will make the occasional flowering appearance back into our little garden this side of the pond..

Saturday, April 5, 2008 at 03:46PM | Registered CommenterColm

oooh I thing were all in trouble there is just to much american music here... So here is another of my Seger favrits... is that spelt korektly?

Mama/Troll

Agree with you on the pedantic and silly picking up on spelling mistakes. All commenters should refrain from doing that. This isn't an English class.

PS - I am sure if David didn't want other editors to post music videos he would say so. In the meantime , David's fellow guest editors should continue to post music clips if they wish. It isn't compulsory for anyone to listen to them if they don't like them.

I hope that's not why she left. I didn't ask her. Hell there has been some heated back and forths but nothing like those that reached the level of some in the past.

Mama,

"If they go off on a spelling and grammer tangent it is usually because the have no logical reasons for their point of view on whatever the topic is, which is typical with liberals."

Over 'ere it's always the conservatives wot complain about falling standards in grammar and spelling.

Our liberals wish to have us all writing in txtspel.

I'm sure Daphne would not have allowed herself to be pushed away, she's fr tougher than that. It's probably the case that she decided to take a rest from ATW for a while anyway and the incident just spurred her into making the break.

Saturday, April 5, 2008 at 04:03PM | Registered CommenterColm

In blog writing, as in business writing, the emphasis is and should be in getting the fundamental thought across- spelling and grammar should not be the first priority.

Especially when participating in a blog thread (as opposed to posting a message )--you are typically multitasking--you're hopefully not just sitting at the computer only blogging--- and you think "I can't let that remark pass"--and you make your comment toute de suite, perhaps after a quick bit of research.

I try hard to fix any spelling errors that I make --I like that squarespace gives you a grace period for amending remarks, just a fabulous feature--but I'm not bothered by spelling errors of others that I see on blogs.

This ain't Shakespeare. Some of the best comments/commentators here have typos in their work, and that's fyne.

Make the point, make it fast, move on.

Saturday, April 5, 2008 at 04:03PM | Registered CommenterThe Phantom

Well I hope she makes it back. I still miss MAD.

Another thing the spelling. Usually it's a good
indication that it is The Troll and not Monica. Most people can tell that by the tone of the post, but the spelling is always a dead give away...

Yes, low quality capture, but rawness goes well with Bob Seger. He looks like he just rolled out of bed there.

Why do you use the same login ?. Although I like to think I can tell which of you is posting by the tone of your posts (no-one does angry like Troll does) it isn't always obvious. I suppose it shouldn't matter as we are all just cybervoices and the debate is what's important but it can still be a bit frustrating not knowing exactly which of you may be behind the comment.

Saturday, April 5, 2008 at 04:25PM | Registered CommenterColm

David gave us 1 login, and since Monica works at night and I work during the day it fits well. Besides the last thing I want is another password to remember. I have like 20 at work.

Phantom,

Shakespeare wasn't Shakespeare, he was Edward de Vere!

General Point,

If I had any issues with others musical postings I would say so. I don't, move along...

Saturday, April 5, 2008 at 04:56PM | Registered CommenterDavid Vance

'spelling and grammar should not be the first priority'

Phantom basically I can agree with that, this isn't about simply going on about grammar, but we are communicating through the written word. Also I can respect the fact that for some we create differently and their main interest is in getting their point of view accross.

I'm not looking for correct grammar, but there are more than a few people involved, this isn't text messaging between friends. You speak of business writing. How would you feel if you got a letter from a company with a mis-spelt headline? I'd toss it, why? Because I'd think it was a fraud. It simply wouldn't fly.

Agreed blogs are informal but c'mon there is a basic line and once you slip under it,with spelling what will come next. Guess the meaning of words????

'because it was not meant for you.'

I see. So some threads are not for all readers? Somewhere along the line David Vance didn't tell us all that. I wasn't aware of it before, maybe he as site owner could straighten out for us, what is the situation. I was under the impression he provided an open platform - like other blogs - with no exclusive zones. You seem to be introducing something different.

'wistful longings for the days when the Americans weren't around? '

Was I doing that Patty? I didn't think I was.

'Critical commentary just ain't what it used to be.'

Patty was your 3.42pm comment an example of

'acerbic wit?

Why don't you show us how its done eh?

'The Troll is a true example of the "Angry White Man" who has no one to vote for in our upcoming presidential election. You can expect him to be semi-coherent for at least the next even months.'

lol @ Alan.

Cait

You were correcting Grammer and spelling. No point in saying you weren't. Of course if someones' writing is so bad that it becomes impossible to read and understand then it can be necessary to point it out, but picking up on misplaced apostrophes is silly and irrelevant to debate.

As to the point about music videos. Why does it matter if our American regulars put up music that isn't to your taste. You can simply ignore those postings rather than complain they shouldn't be there.

Saturday, April 5, 2008 at 05:16PM | Registered CommenterColm

'If I had any issues with others musical postings I would say so. I don't, move along...'

Usually I wouldn't either, but Troll has five videos on the front page. I think its a little over the top, but if you're happy with it.....

Saturday, April 5, 2008 at 05:17PM | Registered CommenterCait

'if our American regulars put up music that isn't to your taste'

That's not what I said. I said the amount can be over the top.

Re your other points are addressed in my reply to Phantom.

Spelling is important if people are communicating via the written word. There are spell checks and their purpose is to spell or help spell. Why? Because we are communicating via the written word. Troll's insistence that he does not use a spell check because it annoys people like me is childish.

How many people come here just to read? Most of us are well enough read, even if not formally educated. Why come to a site to read bad spelling and be presented with 7 videos at present on the front page with the majority of them subsidising for a written post.

Any way, I've said all I have to say, it ain't my site, so why should I give a toss. I presented what I had to say, said it, hopefully in an understandable way, and now I don't have anything more to say on it.

First of all the 5 videos you speak of arent all Friday night music videos.

The First on which is the one that got your panties in a not was a political comment due to Obama saying he was going to appoint algore Global Warming Czar. The video is a ridicule of global warming and him not a Friday Night Music Vid.

The Second Video is a tribute to one of the greatest men from the last century, but I guess you couldn't grasp that.

The last Video was a Good Bye post to Daphne so to bad.

That leaves just the Bob Seger Two shot which is really only one post.

So that equals only one musical post I guess your math is as bad as my spelling.

Saturday, April 5, 2008 at 05:52PM | Registered CommenterGrizzly Mama / Troll

Colm,

You know very well that when Cait says 'Jump', you automatically ask 'How high', - and you are expected to do it, 'with style'...

Is that an example of ascerbic wit? :-) I didn't think so, but at least I tried...

Re the video clips on ATW, I must confess that I have never watched one, - the musical tastes of younger generations just simply do not appeal, and anyway I have never heard of some of the artistes posted, and the ones I have heard of never appealed in their heyday, why should they sound any better now?

For me there is only one Elvis, and it ain't Costello...:-)

Yeah I grasped it Troll.

It's the amount - is all I'm saying.

'The First on which is the one that got your panties in a not was a political comment due to Obama saying he was going to appoint algore Global Warming Czar. The video is a ridicule of global warming and him not a Friday Night Music Vid.'

yeah Troll

'panties in a not'

lol no panties in a knot whether you spell it with a 'k' or leave it out. And I rest my case!

'not' has a completely different meaning to 'knot', which could lead to some people guessing at your meaning or having to infer it from context.

Why don't you simply use the spell check Troll?
