Let the bells ring out - on the very day that Saint Peter (Robinson) ascends to the DUP throne, companies in the Republic of Ireland were given a green light by the Dublin government to seek to employ a ready pool of available undergraduates in Northern Ireland - without the risk of losing their present tax-exempt status. Yes, Biffo himself - Brian Cowen, has sallied north to meet Saint Peter and share in our mutual good fortune. 5000 jobs "could" be created over the next 5 years as a result of this change in the Republic's taxation laws as it essentially harmonises this aspect of tax. (Bit like the mythical 20,000 jobs that were going to be created in the tourist industry if ONLY we all signed up to the Belfast Agreement)It ALL sounds so good, doesn't it, a benign Irish government that only wants to help us, right? Or just one more step towards de facto financial unity, with the DUP goons grinning as NI spins OUT of its orbit with the rest of the UK? Ulster Nationalists - beware of them.

It would be a pity if the mutually beneficial all-Ireland economic agenda was damaged by the old suspicions. Of course they are no all on one side. When Aer Lingus moved its Heathrow route from Shannon to Belfast there was discontent in the south.
But all that is happening is that the island is catching up with the sort of economic activity that should have been happening all along.
The border does not have to be a barrier and when jobs can be created then nothing should stand in the way now that we are faced with some tough economic times.
Jobs, low taxes, what's not to love?
