HOW TO AVOID A SPEEDING FINE!
You have to laugh at the sheer brass neck of it. Yesterday a motorist offered what must be a unique reason why he should keep his driving licence. Mohammed Anwar said a ban would make it difficult to commute between his two wives and fulfil his matrimonial duties. His lawyer told a Scottish court the Muslim restaurant owner has one wife in Motherwell and another in Glasgow - he is allowed up to four under his religion - and sleeps with them on alternate nights. He also needed his driving licence to run his restaurant in Falkirk, Stirlingshire. Anwar admitted the offence, but Sheriff John C. Morris accepted his plea not to be banned and allowed him to keep his licence. Just taking care of Islamic responsibilities I guess and the Scottish courts go with it!

If a man needed his licence for work to feed his family the ;same courts would take it from him...
dhimmitude?????
lunacy more like!
Muslims keep two wives while in the West we abandon the first wife completely and move in with the second. We allow many spouses but just not at the same time.
Christian marriage is the alternative to both.
Henry
Are you saying divorce should be banned ?
Colm
In my view divorce is a lie. It is impossible to be married to another while your spouse is alive. And the state has no right to dissolve a legitimate marriage.
Clearly that is a minority position so the question of banning divorce does not arise. But if the state declared my marriage void I would not consider myself free to marry someone else.
Henry
You are expressing the difference between marraige as a sacrament and marraige as a civil contract. The state has every right to agree to undo a contract which it has enabled. A union in the eyes of God and individual hearts is a different matter.
Colm
You may hold that the state has that right but I do not and I could not vote for it.
Henry
That's an admirable perspective - but most people, and most cultures do allow for divorce. And for very good reasons.
Henry
Then you end up with the hypocrisy of people remaining married but not being together and going off making new lives with other partners. A marraige is much more than just a legal status. Refusing to allow people to divorce does not stop them being 'divorced'.

I understand why cultures allow it. But I don't see a huge difference between multiple simultaneous marriages and multiple consecutive marriages. That is not a distinction between Islam and Christianity. It is a distinction between Islam and secularism. Neither approach is Christian. That was my point. I am not proposing any change in the law.
Henry
At least with simultaneous marraiges you get them all over with in one go, a bit like concurrent prison sentences :)
Henry,
Don't you feel that if a young person makes a mistake, i.e. marries what turns out to be the wrong person, that s/he has the right to try again?
I really don't understand what you have against this. Surely to err is human.
But the divine is not willing to forgive
Colm,
How could you possibly know that? :0)

I was referring to Henry :)
Henry,
"In my view divorce is a lie. It is impossible to be married to another while your spouse is alive. And the state has no right to dissolve a legitimate marriage."
In your view, I infer, civil marriage is also a lie. So the state has every right to dissolve a marriage you don't think is legitimate in the first place.
