THE PRICE OF REWARDING TERRORISM

You do not defeat terrorism by rewarding terrorists, regardless of how many bleeding heart liberals argue otherwise. Want to know where that flawed approach leads to? Read UNIONISM DECAYED 1997-2007 - It's my first book and it explains what happens when you seeek to appease terrorists and call it peace. It's available right now for ATW readers so make sure you get your copy by emailing the editor! This is the book that dissents from the herd mentality that doing wrong can lead to being right. It doesn't and this book spells out WHY.

Now, Just for Fun...

Can you name this tune?

I agree with this comment by someone named TubeGhost: " I think the irony here is that the Soviet anthem is the most spectacular of any in the world and yet it represented the most evil regime in history."

I almost hear the sobs of recognition from parts of the ATW commentary.

It was a fitting fune. You couldn't imagine the most evil of ideologies represented by a jaunty little number. Seventy million dead deserve something melancholy.

>>I think the irony here is that the Soviet anthem is the most spectacular of any in the world and yet it represented the most evil regime in history<<

He's wrong on both counts. It isn't the most spectacular anthem in the world and it didn't represent the most evil regime in history.
Ah, the superlatives, so loved by the unthinking mind (sigh!).
(the lyrics actually weren't written till the late 1970's.)

Doesn't it take away from the messiah jibes? I do agree with one commentator on you tube, propaganda isn't humour.

Pete: "sobs of recognition from parts of the ATW commentary."

lol...you mean the ATW Commentariat, don't you? :)

Noel: In your opinion, what do you think is the most (or close to the most) spectacular anthem in the world?

Thursday, August 28, 2008 at 12:40AM | Registered CommenterPatty

GOSH: "propaganda isn't humour."

To quote a more humble, yet equally spectacular, song:

"Smile though your heart is aching;
Smile even though it's breaking.
When there are clouds in the sky, you'll get by.
If you smile through your fear and sorrow,
Smile and maybe tomorrow,
You'll see the sun come shining through for you.

Light up your face with gladness,
Hide every trace of sadness.
Although a tear may be ever so near,
That's the time you must keep on trying,
Smile, what's the use of crying?
You'll find that life is still worthwhile,
If you just smile.

That's the time you must keep on trying,
Smile, what's the use of crying?
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile

Well, in sheer numbers it was the most evil in history. I suppose you could say that the Pol Pot regime in Cambodia was far more evil in proportionate terms.

Thursday, August 28, 2008 at 01:39AM | Unregistered CommenterGordon

the tune was put together by the Glenn Beck show, the couldn't get any of the usual singers for hire that are used to make parody's in NY or Philly because they felt it was to offensive to Obamma, so they had to use a retired opera singer that donated his time and who's son did the played the musical instruments

Noel who killed more people than Stalin?

Thursday, August 28, 2008 at 03:23AM | Unregistered CommenterThe Troll

Pathetic smear tactics from Rightworld. It's what they do best and there will no doubt be much more of the same between now and election day.

But in any case I don't know what you guys are panicking about. McCain will win easily in November, even if he can't remember how many houses he owns.

Thursday, August 28, 2008 at 09:19AM | Unregistered CommenterPeter

Troll, that's hard to say. It depends, for example, on how you'd answer the question: "How many people did Queen Victoria kill in Ireland?"

>>what do you think is the most (or close to the most) spectacular anthem in the world?<<

Patty, I can't imagine there is a single person with soul so dead that he isn't stirred by La Marseillaise.

I also like Nat King Cole, BTW!

I like the Welsh national anthem, personally.

Thursday, August 28, 2008 at 10:36AM | Unregistered CommenterReg

I quite like the German anthem, should I be worried?

Thursday, August 28, 2008 at 10:57AM | Unregistered CommenterRoss

I quite like the Soviet Hymn, especially this version.

I feel that you can still like a National Anthem even if you don't like its country or Government. I don't like George Bush yet still think Star Spangaled Banner is a brilliant Anthem.

I don't like Rhodri Morgan but Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau is probably the greatest Anthem in the world [other than Amhrán na bhFiann of course].

I will also admit that I like Flower of Scotland and Deutschland Über Alles.

But Patty that song isn't funny - it's uplifting!

Like an underwired bra.

Would it be funny if we super imposed some political propaganda in the form of pictures on to it?? (not the bra but the song.)

Hardly....

Now a good bawdy joke about the one maybe!

heh heh

Does the Vatican have an anthem?

Thursday, August 28, 2008 at 04:08PM | Unregistered CommenterEddie

Eddie,

I don't know. If they do, I'll bet it's Sam Flanagan's favourite anthem!

Thursday, August 28, 2008 at 04:58PM | Unregistered CommenterReg

Eddie, it is called "Inno e Marcia Pontificale", though it isn't referred to as the National Anthem of the Vatican, but more the Anthem of the Pope.

The Frogs win hands down, best captured in Casablanca.

Thursday, August 28, 2008 at 06:08PM | Unregistered Commentermahons

Yup, the French one is probably my favourite off the top of my head. (Our own is a real turgid dirge, in musical terms, I think). Stars and Stripes ain't bad, either. (Is that a Sousa? I love J P Sousa's marches).

On topic (US pre-election mud-slinging), now it's starting to get silly. Y'all should just shut up and vote. Personally I think McCain will probably win, I just have a feeling that Obama comes across as too young, fresh-faced and inexperienced, and I think most Americans will favour an older, more conservative leader. For some, Obama's skin colour might be an issue, but I don't see that as the predominant factor, these days. (I believe that Americans would vote for the fictional character "David Palmer" from "24", as he comes across as strong minded and firm in his convictions, in a way that Obama doesn't).
Nevertheless, even if Obama wins, America did not crumble and die under Carter, nor Clinton. America will survive the Obama years too, if it happens.

You're all wrong.

Certainly Das Reich uber Alles, Le Marseillaise, The Star Spangled Banner et al are fine tunes, but lifted up to the level of national anthems they're simply bombastic. It's not the tunes, it's the seriousness, the reverence almost with which they're treated.

Land of Our Fathers is also a fine piece when given the treatment by a male voice choir. But, I've sat amongst 75,000 Welshman while they've belted it out before playing England in Cardiff, and the effect is comical. The restriction of the intimate choir lifts it, by comparison.

No, there are only two worthy anthems. The first is the Soviet one, since its melancholy and sadness couldn't be captured better.

The other is Hatikva, which is perfect in every way.

Thursday, August 28, 2008 at 09:28PM | Unregistered CommenterPete Moore

Tom: We've survived the Bush years (just a few more months!)

Pete: How could you forget Hail Freedonia! (the most Marxist of anthems - Groucho not Karl).

Thursday, August 28, 2008 at 09:51PM | Unregistered Commentermahons

Hatikva is a fine tune. I believe its on RS's Ipod!

Do the Palestinians have an anthem?

Thursday, August 28, 2008 at 10:00PM | Registered CommenterThe Phantom

I believe they adopted "Life During Wartime" by the Talking Heads.

Thursday, August 28, 2008 at 10:02PM | Unregistered Commentermahons

They might like the "rockets red glare" line. How to begin

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
As we bombed the school bus and the children were screaming?

Mahons -

Compared to Labour or Tory, Obama or McCain, Rufus T Firefly is a model of sanity.

Ross,

"I quite like the German anthem, should I be worried?"

Well at least you admit it...others like David are a fan of this guy for some reason they can't quite put their finger on.

(Listen to the guitar bassline :-)

Friday, August 29, 2008 at 01:39AM | Unregistered CommenterDrunken Cyclist

DC: I've always found humor, mockery and satire to be the most proper responses to the pompous, the selectively outraged and self-righteous whinners.
