ON NO - IT'S SWEDEN VS THE PROPHET AGAIN!
Would you believe it? Sweden's embassy in Pakistan has expressed "regret" over the publication of a cartoon depicting the Prophet Muhammad in a Swedish newspaper. Pakistan had complained about the cartoon, which depicted the head of the Prophet on the body of a dog. Sweden's government said it regretted any hurt but could not apologise as it was not responsible for the drawing and could not prevent its publication. The new drawing depicting the Prophet's head on the body of a dog was published in the Swedish newspaper Nerikes Allehanda on Sunday. The cartoon's creator, Lars Vilks, told the Associated Press news agency the drawing was art. "I'm not against Islam. Everybody knows that," he is quoted as saying. (on his way to his studio somewhere in Outer Mongolia, I'm reckoning)
I don't understand why the artist decided to graft the head of Mohammad onto a dog but I can see that this could be taken as offensive, and not just to dog-owners! ut unless we are going to censor everything - something which I am sure Pakistan would probably approve of - then I'm afraid Muslims are going to have to learn a little tolerance.

I thought the British-American humor divide was large enough. Can someone explain the humor in the cartoon? It looks like a bad drawing by an untalented eight year old child. Perhaps the caption is missing?

The Washington Post Writers Group syndicates "Opus," and the Post is the cartoon's home newspaper. The syndicate sent out an alert about the two strips in question, according to Writers Group comics editor Amy Lago.
Sources told FOXNews.com that the strips were shown to Muslim staffers at The Washington Post to gauge their reaction, and they responded "emotionally" to the depiction of a woman dressed in traditional Muslim garb and espousing conservative Islamic views.
There was also considerable alarm over the strip at the highest echelons of The Washington Post Co., according to the sources.
Lago said she flagged some of the syndicate's newspaper clients for two reasons: because of the possibility that the jokes about Islam would be misconstrued and because of the sexual innuendo in the punchline.
"The strip came in and I knew we would have to send out an alert to all the newspapers," Lago said. "I do that fairly regularly with materials that might pose issues for local areas. ... We knew that because it was a sex joke, it could raise issues. And there is another client that has issues with any Muslim depiction whatsoever."
Noel - good one and good idea, we should have a Mike Cunningham style competition to determine the winning caption. I'll offer "Worst in the Show" as my entry.
I'm assuming putting Muhammad's head on a dog is supposed to be a reference to his - and Islam's in general's - dislike of dogs because they are "unclean". It is no doubt provocative and even offensive.
But that's all part of free speech. Muslims need to learn to live with it, instead of descending into fits of murderous rage whenever such cartoons are drawn. The Swedish embassy is playing the dhimmi game - not good.

yep, muslims is once again showing their tolerance, love of peace, compassion and great sense of proportion. how? oh of course, with burning walking on flags (ehh, anyone offended? yawn.) burning of dolls(islam or voodoo?) and the usual threat of death murder hell and destruction. That's the cartoon? I couldn't find it. Damn, that man couldn't draw his way out of a wet paper bag.
I wouldn't read too much into the embassy's apology. I gather that's what embassies are for.

Man, that's a lousy cartoon. They should have apologized for the quality of the artwork, it looks like a 10 year old drew it.

I can't seem to find anywhere what the message of the cartoon was meant to be. I can understand the simplistic message of insulting Muslims by putting Mohameds head on a dog but wht is the meaning of the goal.
the goal = according to muslim a jew a is a dog, god created man to be his image - a jew is a man, but a jew is a dog, -> the image of god is a man -> then god is a dog, and followingly muhammed is a dog

AAh I understand it now. Something about a Jewish dog thinking he's human but in actual fact turning out to be a Muslim god in the head but ordinary dog in the body. Do I win a prize ?
