THE PRICE OF REWARDING TERRORISM

You do not defeat terrorism by rewarding terrorists, regardless of how many bleeding heart liberals argue otherwise. Want to know where that flawed approach leads to? Read UNIONISM DECAYED 1997-2007 - It's my first book and it explains what happens when you seeek to appease terrorists and call it peace. It's available right now for ATW readers so make sure you get your copy by emailing the editor! This is the book that dissents from the herd mentality that doing wrong can lead to being right. It doesn't and this book spells out WHY.

We have had the most amazing week in the financial markets for decades. It has ended with the US government bailing out the US banks with a huge injection of public funds, effectively taking their toxic loans off their books at the expense of the US taxpayer.

The last time this happened (under Ronald Reagan) the taxpayers ended up losing 50% of their money. It's likely that the same result will be achieved this time, but of course it will take several years before this is known, by which times the politicians who engineered it will be long gone.

So the deal seems to be, if the banks make profits they belong to the banks, but if they make losses the taxpayers should bail them out, because the alternative (a collapsed banking system) is too awful to contemplate.

Well, outrageous, but maybe the lesser of two evils. But if this has to happen, the price must be a severe one on the banks, including much stricter regulation and limits to the greedy million dollar executive bonuses, based on what turned out to be non-existent profits.

Yeah, I wish!

.....but the coming November may well turn things around due to the 'Palin effect'.
McCain clearly understands his people better almost than they understand themselves.
I sincerely believe she is a genuine force for good, not-with-standing her lack of experience, and since those people who despise her are the very ones whose opinions I in turn despise, then I know I'm on to a winner.

Banking has effectively wormed its way into being the lynchpin of all economics, instead of being just another cog. When "financialism" dominates, all other endeavours become subservient.

Has anyone noticed the silence?

I mean the silence of Patty and Phantom and Daphne and the other "small government" Republicans - just as a Republican president makes the biggest state grab of private assets ever, in the name of saving the system. Even if it is only the losses he's relieving the wbankers of.

Expect a return to the culture wars immediately. Free-market conservatism may be in freefall, but, hey, I wonder how many babies the Democrats murdered today? Or if Obama's teleprompt broke down? Or maybe he forgot to feed his goldfish? Heck, those are the issues!

I think I've been clear that this is a mistake and the biggest turn toward socialism this nation has ever made. The fed needs to be shut down and half in congress hung

Peter: "I mean the silence of Patty and Phantom and Daphne and the other "small government" Republicans"

speaking for myself, I've been busy all day. There's nothing I like better than speaking about the benefits of less government - but I do have a life outside my kitchen.

Saturday, September 20, 2008 at 02:18AM | Unregistered CommenterPatty

Peter: It's not the Republicans, btw, who sent 30 or so lawyers up to ALaska to dig up the personal dirt on Palin. It's not the Repub. who are trying to say that Palin had her brother-in-law fired (she didn't) or banned books from the library (she didn't) It's not the Repubs. who are crying "racism" at nothing just to keep the Repubs. on the defense. It's the Dems.

Now that I'm thinking about it, if all you have is the Democrat mantra:

"the election should be about the REAL issues!" waaa!

Meanwhile, doing everything to make the debate petty and personal, than I don't really have time.

Peter, you don't really keep up with the individual positions here on atw, do you? We're just one big clump of rightworld, skygod worshipping, mouth breathing droolers.

Go check the threads over the past couple of years big boy - I'm not a big Bush fan. But I'll give the poor bastard a break on this one, this mess was cooked up way before he took office and he did make an attempt to rectify it many years ago.

Why aren't you bashing the dems on this one? There's more than enough political blame to spread around here, or are you too much of a liberally biased, reality denying dork to address the issue honestly? Can I pass you a bib?

Charles: Was I ever right! I told you I was giving you guys a tip!

I have a certain talent (but only in the macro sense)....when the market started to nose dive the other day my husband asked me what I thought - "hold!" I said. I also said, " buy!" (if only we had the cash!)

I also have parking karma, btw. I can always find a parking spot.

Weird....but useful in LA.

The donation of £1M from JK Rowling to the Labour Party!!

Another grubby little champagne socialist using her fiscal might to try to keep in power a government whose policies are heaping misery on the broad mass of people in this country.

Let's hope her fortunes go the same way as those of her precious bloody Labour Party.

Saturday, September 20, 2008 at 08:03AM | Unregistered CommenterAndrew McCann

Is JK a Dame ?. If not, I'm pretty sure she soon will be .

Saturday, September 20, 2008 at 10:33AM | Unregistered CommenterColm

Andrew.

JKR writes fiction. Period. Her very rare forages into the realities of politics and life, demonstrates that her head is still firmly stuck up Harry Potter's arse.

Peter.

I doubt if my opinion would warrant inclusion in that esteemed organ.... but you have a point...in fact, if you took your hat off we could all see it...

Saturday, September 20, 2008 at 11:13AM | Unregistered Commenterbernard

Always knew that Rowling was a Labour supporter. In Half Blood Prince she refers to Maggie Thatcher as a "he".

Saturday, September 20, 2008 at 01:09PM | Unregistered CommenterSeamus

I don't see anything wrong with someone making a donation to a political party once we know about it.

And unlike a lot of donors Rowling isn't looking for anything. She just agrees with Labour.

Saturday, September 20, 2008 at 01:23PM | Unregistered CommenterHenry94

And in reality, over 9.5 Million people agreed with Labour in the last Election, so it mightened be a shock that she does.

Saturday, September 20, 2008 at 01:27PM | Unregistered CommenterSeamus

Henry

Like all donors she is looking for something, to pressure Labour into continuing policies she approves of - namely in this case, throwing money at single parents. It is her perfect right to do so, but there is something unhealthy about a party in office who come to rely so much on the benefaction of wealthy interest groups or individuals rather than being able to succeed financially through the small donations of a large and satisifed proportion of the electorate. It's better a party persuades 100,000 people to donate a tenner to it than pocket a million from one person.

Saturday, September 20, 2008 at 02:15PM | Unregistered CommenterColm

FrankO.

RE. Those two links you highlighted. I read them.
Call me old fashioned but do people really change their core 'Principles' from one party (Reps) to another party (Dems) purely because a new face they don't like, appears on the scene? If so, then image is everything in US politics, and 'content' counts for nothing. The Yanks cannot be that superficial, surely?
I will predict that if Palin remains straight as a gun barrel and doesn't wobble to appease anyone, the Reps will see another term in office, and hard cheese for those would-be mind-benders on the left.

Saturday, September 20, 2008 at 02:15PM | Unregistered Commenterbernard

Bernard, the people who change Party Allegience are those who are stuck between the two. People who agree with a large amount of what the Republicans are saying and people who agree with a large amount of what the Democrats are saying. Take me for example, I agree more with the Democrats on things like Economic and Foreign Policy while I agree more with the Republicans on things like Social Policy. I don't have a clear Political Allegience and would have a sever trouble choosing who to vote for if I live in the States. It is people like that the these parties are trying to persuade.

Anyone reading about the maze escape documentary to be shown on bbc on monday?

That was until September 25 1983 when 38 IRA prisoners housed in H-block 7 put in motion an escape plot that had been months in the planning.

After taking over the wing by overpowering the guards with handguns smuggled into the prison, the break-out – the biggest since the Second World War escape from Colditz camp – began in earnest.

It looks like it will be a good show, it's got a good write up in todays' press.

I can't seem to post to the Iraq thread, it won't take my post but I don't agree with the post.
