THE FIRST AMONGST INCOMPETENTS...

Gordon Brown - saviour of the universe. The man whose prompt decisive actions have saved not just the UK economy but also that of the rest of the world. So the spin goes. He is a serious man for serious times. Or, a grotesque clown who has devastated the British economy and whose legacy will be decades of debt. But now comes a poll in the left-wing Guardian newspaper suggesting voters have severe doubts about Brown's tax cutting and borrowing plans to ease the pain of the economic downturn.
It said the Conservatives had extended their lead over Brown's Labour government to 15 points, enough to ensure a substantial parliamentary majority if repeated at an election - not due till 2010. Some 45 per cent of those surveyed backed the Conservatives, up three points and matching a peak of support achieved twice over the summer in ICM polls, compared to just 30 per cent for Labour.
My own feeling from speaking to people is that the Pre-Budget statement earlier this week has been received very badly by the general public. Most people sense that Labour is being reckless with their future, piling up astronomical debts and setting up huge tax increases. Against rising unemployment, falling expectations, Labour will struggle to get traction and I think that their ratings in the polls will continue to fall. After Christmas, we will see a surge in unemployment, currently deferred, and with property still in free-fall, 2009 is going to be a very tough year. Brown will be blamed, Brown should be blamed. He is the First amongst incompetents.

Spot on, DV. I see Brown as a malevolent clown. It seems that if he can misunderstand something, he will.
what is the Uniform he is wearing?
I think it is Russian - something he feels at home in.
It was not a "pre-budget statement", but in fact an emergency budget which has taken huge risks with government finances. The Vat cut of 2.5% will fail to stimulate spending, because most retailers will not pass it on to their customers - why should they?
I still think the next election will be a comfortable Tory win in any case, but if the measures taken last week are seen to have failed it could well be a melt-down for Labour.
David,
Can I ask: Why would you support a Conservative Government in the UK?
it looks russian...LOL
Here is something from the Amazon book review to gladden the heart:
Brown, aware of his reputation as loathing all things to do with being a Brit, wrote a book last year titled: Wartime Courage.
Never heard of it?
Not surprising, as it has sold 193 copies in the two weeks after its launch.
I would suggest he copies the late great Spike Milligan who wrote a book: Hitler; My part in his downfall.
Brown could call his: England; my part in its downfall.
