THE LIGHTS ARE GOING OUT
Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at 11:18AM It was Sir Edward Grey speaking to a friend one evening just before the outbreak of the First World War, as he watched the lights being lit on the street below his office who said:
"The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime"
It carried a certain poignant resonance. Still does.
Well, the lights (lamps) are now going out across Buckinhamshire (An English county in which I lived for several years!) Yes, blackouts are being imposed by councils - urged on by the Governmenr - to cut energy bills and meet "climate change" targets. Buckinghamshire is carrying out one of the most radical trials of the new approach. More than 1,700 lights, which illuminate 25 miles of roads, will soon be switched off completely. So, out goes the lights and common sense is blackened out- but hey. we're saving the Earth. I wonder if this is a Conservative controlled Council, in which case it shows that they are every bad as deranged as Labour on this issue. I'm sure the criminal class will applaud this initiative and I feel sorry for the vulnerable who are (literally) being plunged into darkness by the little Hitler's in the council chamber. Even the Police are condemning it, but I reckon this is just the thin end of th environmental-wedge.

I read a book recently about the outbreak of the First World War. It seems that Grey never said those words, or anything like them.
Great a rebate on council tax. Or just to keep the pension pot in good shape.
We (Scotland central belt town) have had two power cuts in last 2 months. We have asked if this is due to our third world status. No reply.
The folk who run our councils are just a bit thick. I don't see any of them getting a job and keeping it in the real world of private business.
Our status as a third world country grows as we see the infrastucture of our land fall apart.
Pots holes are the prime example. The way they appear you'd think there was a government target for them.
I thought it was Lloyd George.
I doubt very much David, if it is to do with the environment, though it's cracking good excuse to enforce a kind of 'moral blackmail', which would be difficult for tax payers to challenge in the present climate.
No. Central government, and by extension local govt, are running out of money.
"Annual expenditure £20, annual income £19/6d. Result, misery".
