THE SCOTS ARE REVOLTING...
Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at 05:15PM I see that the trades unions are flexing their collective muscle in the people's Republic of Scotland...
Local services including schools, bin collections and ferry crossings have been disrupted as thousands of council workers staged a 24 walk-out over pay. Up to 150,000 comrades of the GMB, Unite and Unison unions joined the dispute across the country after rejecting a 2.5% pay deal over three years.
I betcha they will squeeze more money out of the the local government administrators. Scotland is a wonderful place, amazing scenery and very nice people but they have become fixated on the right to welfare, the right to above inflation wage increases and have become institutionally socialised. Even the Scottish conservatives are liberal. It's a crying shame. Then again, perhaps a nation that can believe in the Loch Ness monster can also believe that inflation has no economic consequences if it is ignored by reckless trade unionists.

"Even the Scottish conservatives are liberal"
There is a difference between Liberalism and Socialism. Some one who believe in complete Laissez Faire Capitalism can also be liberal, while someone who believes in Socialism can also be conservative in social issues. I for one am a Socialist, but in for example Crime and Abortion and other issues can be quite Conservative.
Socialism is only an economic theory. It has nothing to do with Liberalism.
A 2.5% pay raise over three years doesn't strike me as largess. I'd strike too.
They'll probably get every wee bawbee they're asking for, and a few more besides, because the Scottish paymasters are actually based within the Treasury Building in Westminster, so instead of the unbalanced Barnett formula which even it's author reckons is unbalanced, the end result will be a barnett-and-a quarter!
They'll get every bit because the Labour clowns are terrified of the predicted Labour melt-down north of the border, and one of the top targets of the SNP is 'Our Gordon' no less!
Mike C,
Exactly right.

Yep, I blame the Americans for turning liberal into a synonym for socialist. In quite a lot of countries the liberal parties are the ones that are the most enthusiastic about the free market and free trade.
Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of whinging, loathsome, leeching parasites.
Ross, blame the American leftists for hijacking the liberal label. They lassoed the word 'progressive', too. Both are now just code for Damn Commie.
Monica, that's a reasonable point. In fact I blame Presidents Roosevelt and Johnson in particular.
I really loathe the word progressive. As if those who disagree with their idiotic bullshit are against progress. I think they're more rightly termed regressives.
