Totally Beyond the Veil

Further to David's article on the rather disappointing news that only a bare majority of the British people disapprove of wearing the niqab ('facial handkerchief' to you and me) in public places, did anybody see the BBC report about the sales of this black material abomination in a principal Muslim outlet in Blackburn?  Since Jack Straw made his tentative -  nay, 'man of straw'  - remarks about politely asking Muslim women to remove this monstrosity in his presence at constituency surgeries, sales of the veil have actually risen.

We are told by Muslims (oh Allah, there goes that dreaded 'M' word again) that wearing the niqab is demanded in the Koran.  Aside from the fact that if the Koran said all Bradford male Muslims had to bare their bums in the shop windows of the city's Kirkgate Centre at 7am every Wednesday morning, there would be a mid-week stampede fuelled by testosterone, why should sales only start to rise on the back of what the MSM derisively calls a 'controversy'?  If the niqab is so fundamental to Islamic female modesty, why should it only be so after Straw brought it to national attention?

The truth is the veil is not any symbol of modesty, but a further show of defiance from a community the rest of us are getting increasingly sick and tired of.  As several ATW readers have stated, if we lived in Muslim countries we would have to abide by their customs.  My word, would we have to abide by their customs!!!!!!!!  The same principles should apply here.  They can either integrate or find Islamic solace in one of the undemocratic backwaters they proclaim as their cultural homelands.

>>.. sales of the veil have actually risen.<<

That was only to be expected.

(sort of like Danes donning the yellow star in 1940 as a gesture of solidarity with their Jewish countrymen!)

I have actually heard more muslims saying that it is not ordered in the Koran. Those who do it are going the extra mile so to speak.

I think that I'll be content if they and everyone else, abides by our laws.

Apart from conforming to dress codes for some professions and in some circumstance court etc., people should be free to wear what they like. If I was to decide that I wanted to wear the veil, (well it's quicker than makeup), then I should be allowed to, regardless of whether I am wearing it for religious, vanity, shyness, bad hair day or to hide tha bags under my eyes.

There you have it in a nutshell. Do we copy the intolerance of Islamic countries as Andrew suggests above, or do we actually defend what makes us different and tolerate freedom in all it's good bad and ugly glory.

'or do we actually defend what makes us different and tolerate freedom in all it's good bad and ugly glory'

No we don't. Becuase Islam will use our freedoms as a weapon to advance their own aspirations at the expense of our own.

ZERO TOLERANCE, COLM. ZERO TOLERANCE!!!

Andrew

We are intelligent enough as a nation surely to know that we can protect freedom without having to damage it unnecessarily . It is perfectly possible to balance an acknowledgment that people can choose different lifestyles moral choices and clothing options without ever conceding that such choices will be imposed on others.

i cant believe some people still rattle on about this postmodern "toleration" of every shitty-thing going, just because somehow, thats what supposedly made us so fab in the first place.
We dont have to (and wont,) tolerate those intolerant factors which undermine our very freedoms.
A healthy body is just that because it maintains its integrity by eliminating external threats, and yes i am aware of the dangers of excessive auto-immune self destruction, and the balance which needs to be struck.
However, overwhelming evidence seems to suggest that followers of the R.o.P. are closet supremacists who should be opposed and defeated at every point, until such a time when they give up their quest to lord it over the rest of us.

I don't know about sales of niqabs here in Halifax, but I haven't seen it worn in the town centre since Straw said his piece. Previously I had seen a few niqabs a week. Perhaps wearers are sticking closer to home.
