What A Joke
Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at 02:30PM So, TIME gives its stamp of approval to this sort of leadership?Putin named Time 'Person of the Year'
New York - Russian President Vladimir Putin was named Time magazine's "Person of the Year."
The 2007 honor went to the Russian leader because of Putin's "extraordinary feat of leadership in taking a country that was in chaos and bringing it stability," said Richard Stengel, Time's managing editor.
Others who were in the running included Nobel Prize-winner Al Gore and author J.K. Rowling. As were noted humanitarians such as the Austrian corporal and Josef Stalin.
This year's honor was a return to the magazine's tradition of picking an individual rather than last year's choice of anyone creating or using content on the World Wide Web.
Previous winners have also included Bono, President George W. Bush and Amazon.com CEO and founder Jeff Bezos.

Perfect choice for the non-PC days ahead :)
Hitler was once Time man of the year.
The criteria aren't based on what good you have done.
"The criteria aren't based on what good you have done."
Exactly, Garfield. Time isn't saying that Putin is a great fellow. He clearly is not by any decent standards.
Garfield, you're right.
The criteria is "the person facilitating maximum mischief and mayhem, either in the past or future, to the detriment of mankind."
Purpose of the award is to give maximum exposure and empowerment to
said person.
It's similar to the Nobel Peace Prize in this way.
patty: it goes to the most newsworthy. it has never been intended to empower anyone.
Perhaps it's for those who have 'out-capitalisted' the capitalists! No mean feat for what was the most vehement and vicious of statist regimes. The same goes for China and much of Asia, all places where the ethos of communism once, and probably still does, reign supreme, and, at least two of which, seem set to be the major players on the world's financial scene in the near future.
Now they are more successful - in a capitalist sense, than most of the supposedly capitalist orientated, countries of the West, but then they don't seem to be too bothered about things like human rights, global warming, and seem to have scant regard for the impoverished of the planet.
Is Time trying to send some sort of Randian subliminal message?
Patty,
you do know that you won last year so I would be interested in hearing why you consider yourself someone who facilitates maximum mischief and mayhem, either in the past or future, to the detriment of mankind.
Ron,
What did he lose?
The link from the question about Time honoring Putin's leadership is titled, Fraud, intimidation and bribery as Putin prepares for victory.
Garfield, Hitler is the Austrian corporal. Link goes to Time's cover picture for that week, same with link for Stalin.
I think it's funny that J.K. Rowling was nominated but the house elf Doby got it... LOL
Time is just another Rag of the past that used to be considered a must read but time has shown Time to be nothing more than an editorial ragazine that I wouldn't even let my Parot poop on....
Troll,
Should that not be "Perot"?
Dawkins,
He's a loser in whatever process TIME uses to determine who their person of the year is.
Change 'is' to 'was' perhaps?
>vote for United Russia or risk losing their jobs, their accommodation or bonuses, the Guardian has been told in numerous interviews with byudzhetniki (public sector workers),
How is this different from any other european state ?
Well time for another ATW questionnaire. Who should be the person of the year ?
Julian Simmons! Is there anybody else?
Me - I should be person of the year! I'm completely wonderful!
If I can't nominate myself, I would put forth all of the Armed Servicemen and Women who've been slogging it out in the Middle East. God Bless them.
"Who should be the person of the year ?"
General David Petraeus for turning the situation in Iraq around. At the beginning of the year how many people genuinely thought that the situation in Iraq was genuinely recoverable?
Ross,
It's recoverable now?
Dawkins, the fact that the BBC has almost stopped reporting from Iraq is proof enough of the success of the surge. Bear in mind that the BBC only reports reversals to coalition or US efforts.
Of course, absence of violence doesn't mean much, but the surge has achieved its objective.
I would stick with Putin as Man of the Year.
Daphne: You won the prize last year!
